TEAM CAPTAIN

Captain, O Captain!

Yes, every group needs a leader and dragon boat teams are no exception. Here are the key responsibilities of team captains:

  • Recruit and register 16 to 20 paddlers, 1 drummer, and up to 4 alternates for your team and agree on a team name (make it fun and creative!)

    • Enlist a team of people to race on Festival Day. You will want to sign up enthusiastic people who can commit to a full day of racing on Festival Day as well as to the 60-minute practice session.

    • A full team consists of 20 paddlers and 1 drummer. You must have at least 16 paddlers. Everyone on the boat must be at least 12 years old. All participants under 18 must have their waiver signed by a parent or guardian

    • For community or sport mixed teams, at least 8 of your paddlers must be women. You may register up to four additional alternate team members.

    • Your drummer should be a lightweight person who is enthusiastic, fearless, and willing to dress it up as well as ham it up at the event.

    • Register your team on our website to secure a spot in the Festival.

  • Race fees must be made as a single payment using a money order or personal/team check (check's can be made payable to “Cooper River Dragon Boat Festival”). You will need to collect the race fees from your teammates so that you can pay your team race fees in one lump sum. Race fees are not refundable and participation is “first come, first served.” Payment can be mailed to: Cooper River Dragon Boat Festival, 146 Squirrel Tree Lane, Mount Laurel, New Jersey, 08054. Please place your Team Name/Contact Person in the “Memo Section” of the payment.

  • Be sure your team’s registration is completed well in advance of Regatta day. Completed registration includes the Captain's name, the full race fee, a team name and bio. Your team's bio will be listed on the CRDBF website in "The Competition" section.

  • Schedule your team’s practice session (Community Teams Only). In early July, you will be notified of the available times for your practice session (community teams only).

  • Have all team members sign a participation waiver and turn it into the Festival Committee at check-in on Race Day.
